Uncorking Memories: Wine Cruise Guests Share Their Provence River Cruise Experience!

In April, High Park Travel planned a river cruise from Avignon to Lyon on AMA Waterways Cruise Line for friends of a local winery. It offered an enchanting blend of history, culture, and gastronomy, weaving through picturesque landscapes and charming towns on the Rhone River in Provence, France.

Ken Parker, owner of Souther Williams Vineyard, crafter of many wines made here in NC led a group of 10 wine enthusiasts on the AMA Waterways river cruise. Ken said, “I loved the captain’s table. The food and wine was great. The ship staff was amazing." The dedicated staff of AMA works tirelessly to ensure that every meal is a culinary delight, complemented by carefully selected wines that showcase the flavors of the region. Another member of our group Santina E, also enjoyed the cuisine and said, “it was great food, great ambience, and very intimate atmosphere,” speaking about the dining experiences.

Their journey began in the historic city of Avignon, where the majestic Palais des Papes stood as a testament to the region's rich heritage. As they set sail along the Rhône, they were greeted by the vineyard-dotted hillsides of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, home to some of France's most celebrated wines. A visit to a local winery allowed us to indulge in the flavors of the region, savoring the complex aromas and velvety textures that define this renowned appellation.

Continuing, they meandered through the sun-kissed landscapes of Provence, stopping to explore charming villages such as Viviers and Tournon. Each cobblestone street and quaint café beckoned with the promise of authentic experiences and warm hospitality. In Viviers, they wandered through narrow alleyways lined with medieval homes, while in Tournon, they savored panoramic views from the historic Castle of Tournon perched high above the river. Santina noted, “all the excursions were guided by the local guides" which she said enhanced the experience.

One of the highlights of the journey was the vibrant city of Lyon, where the convergence of history, culture, and culinary delights awaited. From the UNESCO-listed Old Town to the bustling markets of Les Halles de Lyon-Paul Bocuse, Lyon captivated us with its dynamic energy and gastronomic prowess. As their cruise drew to a close, they recalled leisurely strolls through fragrant lavender fields to decadent wine tastings in centuries-old cellars.

Their river cruise through Provence was more than just a journey; it was a celebration of the art of slow travel, where every moment was savored and every destination revealed its own unique charm.

We are thankful that we could assist in sending Ken and his group of friends from Souther Williams Vineyards to explore the wonderful wines and scenery of Provence, France.
